Synagogue Administrator Job Description
​
SHEMA Is the merged community of Edgware and Elstree & Borehamwood Masorti. We have a membership of around 250 households and hold services mainly in Borehamwood but once a month in Edgware. We are looking for a warm-hearted, dynamic and efficient administrator with superb communication skills who will be the first point of contact for members (and potential members) for all synagogue related questions and events.
Liaise with and report to the Community Development Manager (CDM) to provide proactive, efficient and professional administrative support in
​
· managing the affairs of the Synagogue
· delivering a high level of service to the community
· providing day-to-day management of the premises and maintenance works in line with current health & safety standards.
Functions required:
· Managing the synagogue office and all related enquires including mailings, IT, room and carpark hire
· Maintaining the Shul database including the Yahrzeits of members
· Social media – updating information on website and social media
· Working with the CDM to support religious, educational and community programming events.
· Working with the CDM to assist the Warden with the administration of all religious services as required and ensuring the building is ready for Shabbat and Yom Tovim including High Holy Days
· Supporting the bookkeeper and Honorary Treasurer in the management of synagogue finances.
· Attending monthly Council meetings and SHEMA AGM. Minute and distribute summary of the meeting.
· Supporting the editor and editorial team in the biannual production of the of the shul magazine including proof-reading and distribution
· Ensuring that the Jewish Joint Burial Scheme (JJBS) and Masorti Judaism have up-to date information concerning SHEMA membership.
· Being responsible for the administration of the DBS checks
· Facilitating enquiries about school applications (CRP forms)
· Liaising and coordinating with families over life-cycle events
· Managing and supervising the Caretaker.
Required Skills
· Highly organised and experienced in all areas of administrative work
· Excellent communication skills for engagement with members of the Community and the synagogue leadership
· Flexible collaborative approach to working and ability to problem solve independently
· Understanding of Jewish Life and synagogue practices
· Willingness to promote the principles of Masorti Judaism
Successful candidates will be required to have a DBS check

20 hours per week
Salary £26,000-£29,000 dependent on experience
