Children's Services

We love the vibrancy that our children bring to the community and we want to encourage them to love coming to shul, meet new friends and engage in the beautiful traditions that Judaism offers.

We run monthly children’s services for 3 different ages:

  • Under 5’s (usually at 11 am on the 3rd Shabbat of the month)

  • Children from Year 1-Year 6 (usually at 10 am on the 3rd Shabbat of the month

  • Bnei Mitzvah age (usually at 10 am on the last Shabbat of the month)

Under 5’s:

This service is led by parent volunteers and includes Shabbat songs, stories, prayers, games and Torah portion activities. It is a lovely informal environment for families to meet and we will often include activities about the chagim.

Years 1-6:

This is usually led by Niki, Community Development Manager, and starts to introduce more of the prayers and tunes that they will hear in the Main Service. There is debate and discussions around the weekly Torah portion and lots of games and quizzes.

Bnei Mitzvah Class:

This is also led by Niki and helps to guide the students through the service in preparation for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. We also look at some deeper questions such as our belief in G-d, why we pray and what it means to us as individuals and how we express our Jewish identity.

If you are coming to children’s services at SHEMA, please do consider bringing your children into our adult services before and after the children’s services. It can be magical for children when the ark is opened and the Torah scrolls come out, so do think about coming early and giving your children a wider Synagogue experience.

Children are also very regular and keen attendees of the community’s Kiddush at the end of every Shabbat morning service!
